PROFILE

Dr. Barbara A. Laviña Caoili is a distinguished entomologist and professor at Institute of Weed Science, Entomology, and Plant Pathology at the University of the Philippines Los Baños. She is the Director of the National Crop Protection Center until 23 March 2025, where she led key research and extension programs in plant health and pest management. 

With extensive expertise in insect pathology, biotechnology, and integrated pest management, Dr. Caoili has spearheaded numerous research projects funded by national and international agencies. Her work has advanced molecular diagnostics, insect resistance management, and the development of biopesticides. She has published widely in high-impact journals and collaborates with global research institutions. She is a recipient of the LB Uichanco Outstanding Entomologist Award for the Academe (2024) and has been honored multiple times under the UP Scientific Productivity System as UP Scientist III (2017–2019, 2020–2022). 

Beyond research, Dr. Caoili has held key administrative roles, including Associate Dean for Research and Extension at UPLB’s College of Agriculture and Food Science. As an educator, she mentors students in entomology, molecular biology, and agricultural biotechnology. She continues to shape agricultural research and education, mentoring students and advancing sustainable pest management solutions for food security in the Philippines and the region.
