This year's theme is "Addressing the Challenges in the Agri-Food Systems towards a Better World."

  • CANARIUM OVATUM CHAPTER HOLDS ITS 2ND REGIONAL CONFERENCE AND ELECTION OF NEW SET OF OFFICERS

    The Philippine Association of Agriculturists (PAA), Inc. (Canarium ovatum Chapter), headed by its President Dr. Marissa N. Estrella, had conducted its 2nd Regional PAA Conference with the theme: “Building Resilient Agriculture as a Frontline Industry Amidst the Challenges of the Time,” on December 14 - 15, 2021 via Zoom and Facebook Live. The said activity was co-sponsored by the Bicol Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (BCAARRD), Bicol University (BU), Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA), Department of Agriculture Regional Office V (DARFO V), and the Department of Applied Economics (DAAE) of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).

    This two-day conference was graced by its keynote speakers, Dr. William D. Dar (DA Secretary), Dr. Louie A. Divinagracia (PAA National President), and Mr. Rodel P. Tortilla (DARFO V Regional Executive Director). Other resource persons were agriculture practitioners, GAWAD Saka Awardees, heads of government agencies, researchers and professors from state universities and colleges (SUCs), farmers, and entrepreneurs from the Philippines and abroad.

    The activity generally aimed to update and capacitate the agriculture workers in addressing the issues and concerns in the agriculture sector during this challenging time. Specifically, it intended to convene agriculture workers and enthusiasts to: 1) Acquire relevant information and insights from authorities regarding the status and impact of climate change, ASF and CoVID19 pandemic as well as its prospects and opportunities in the agriculture sector; 2) Develop ideas on how to handle the situation in their respective service areas; and 3) Share knowledge and experiences along their field of expertise.

    The first day of the webinar had established good expectations and excitement among participants toward the topics delivered by the resource persons and the keynote speakers. Dr. Melvin B. Carlos, Deputy Executive Director of DOST-PCAARRD, discussed on “Covid 19 Pandemic & Post-Pandemic Impact and Action Plan for the Agriculture Sector. His talk was followed by the discussion on “Climate Change and Sustainable Food Systems” by Dr. Ma. Victoria O. Espaldon, Program Leader of the Project Smarter Approaches to Reinvigorate Agriculture as an Industry (SARAI) and Dr. Josefina U. Bañadera, a Veterinarian III at DA-RFO 5 on the Status, Impact, and Opportunities of African Swine Flu. In the afternoon, Dr. Elsa A. Parot, ATI V Regional Director, talked about Urban Agriculture Models and Opportunities. At the same time, Professor Bicol University College of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Antonio P. Payonga, presented Conservation Farming Villages. In addition to this, another professor from SUC, Prof. Lilia C. Pasion, Director of the Regional Apiculture Center located at the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture, discussed Crop Production and Meliponiculture. Also, the proprietress of Leslie Pili Products, Ms. Minda Yee, shared about her learning experiences as an entrepreneur while Mr. Mateo B. Zipagan, Regional Manager of Philippine Coconut Authority, and Ms. Corazon A. Orbon, DARFO V Research Division Chief, presented about Coconut-based Farming System and Integrated Farming System, respectively. There was also a sharing of success stories of farmers by Mr. and Mrs. Bayani F. Purisima and family from Tigaon, Camarines Sur.

    The topics presented on the second day were as follows: Enhancing Farmer’s Entrepreneurial Capability by Ms. Eden SP. Sarmiento (Senior Trade and Industry Development Specialist of the Department of Trade and Industry Regional Office V); Agricultural Development Initiatives of Albay Province by Ms. Cheryll O. Rebeta (Provincial Agriculturist of Albay); Success Stories of Farm Tourism Enterprise Operation by Ms. Sheila Marie M. Dino (Owner of El Miro De Shei in Camalig, Albay); and Agriculture Sector under Mandanas-Garcia Ruling by Atty. Magdalena A. Borbe (Regional Legal Officer of the Department of Interior and Local Government Region V). Furthermore, Dr. Robert C. Kemerait, Jr., a professor from the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, discussed the Strategies and Coping Mechanisms of Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) Amidst Covid 19 Pandemic and other Adversities while Dr. Victoria C. Lapitan, Director of DA-PhilRice V, presented on the Agricultural Extension workers experiences. On the other hand, Dr. Honeylet J. Nicolas, Research Director of Bulacan State Agricultural College, and Dr. Joel L. Adorada, DA-Bureau of Plant Industry Senior Agriculturist of DA-Bureau of Animal Industry, presented rabbit Production and Opportunities and Black Soldier Fly Farming Technology and its Prospects, respectively. Also, a young Filipino farmer in the name of Mr. Roberto N. Diesta, a delegate to the Young Filipino Farmer Leaders Training Program in Japan, shared his experiences about farming and the challenges encountered during technology adoption. Last but not least, the Director of SEARCA, Dr. Glenn B. Gregorio, discussed “Sustainable Food Production in the Philippines Amidst the Challenges of Climate Change and COVID 19 Pandemic”. After each plenary session, an open forum was conducted for the participants to be able to raise and answer questions. The election and oath-taking of the new set of PAA Bicol Chapter Officers were done on the second day. Dr. Lester M. Narvaez, a professor from BU, replaced Dr. Estrella as President of the Canarium ovatum Chapter. The new set of officers is composed of Vice President Dr. Amelia R. Nicolas from CBSUA, Secretary Prof. Maria Melania T. Sangalang from Partido State University (PSU), Treasurer Prof. Mae S. Lustre from CBSUA, Auditor Mr. Gabriel B. Atole from Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA), PIO Mr. Gilbert H. Morente, from Philippine Science High School and the Business Managers Prof. Erwin E. Torres from BU and Ms. Lea M. Beltran from DA. Together with the key officers are the representatives from each province of the Bicol Region. They were inducted by Dr. Roberto F. Rañola, Jr., PAA Chairman. The officers will serve PAA Bicol Chapter for two years, from 2021 to 2023.
